Methylphenidate, marketed under the brand names Ritalin and Concerta, among others, is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant used in the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. It can be administered orally or applied to the skin, and different formulations have variable durations of effect.[3] For ADHD, methylphenidate’s efficacy is comparable to atomoxetine,[11][12][13][14] but slightly less than amphetamines,[15][16][17][18] alleviating executive function deficits in sustained attention, inhibition, working memory, reaction time,[19] and emotional self-regulation.[20][21]
Methylphenidate is known to have side effects and cause withdrawal symptoms after regular use.
Methylphenidate is thought to work by blocking the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine by neurons.[22][23] It is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant of the phenethylamine and piperidine classes. It is available as a generic drug.[24] In 2023, it was the 50th most prescribed drug in the United States, with over 13 million prescriptions filled.[25][26]
